transformation into structure

I call this change, in which human play comes to its true consummation in being art, “transformation into structure”. Only through this change does play achieve ideality, so it can be intended and understood as play. Only now does it emerge as detached from the representing activity of the players and consist in the pure appearance of what they are playing. As such, the play – even the unforeseen elements of improvisation – is in principle repeatable and hence permanent. It has the character of a work, of an ergon and not only of energeia.
